He distinguished himself as a regimental and divisional commander, becoming a recipient of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and the German Cross in Gold. Awards and Decorations: German Cross in Gold (Deutsches Kreuz in Gold) – 12 March 1942, as Major in Infanterie-Regiment 122. Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross (Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes) – 17 August 1942, as Oberstleutnant and Kommandeur of Infanterie-Regiment 122, 50. Infanterie-Division.
